Q

What are some methods of hair removal?

A

Strip waxing, hard waxing, sugaring, threading, electrolysis, laser.

18
Q

What is strip waxing? What is strip wax made up of, and how should it be applied?

A

One of the most popular methods of hair removal is strip waxing or soft waxing. Soft waxing has a lower melting point and they remain soft on the skin.

Formulas are derived from resins (from pine trees or vegetable resins), beeswax, paraffin, and other substances. Waxes may include additives to address the needs of different skin types. Azulene or lavender may be used for sensitive skins. Tee tree may be added for an antiseptic benefit. Most soft waxes are oil soluble.

This method of application requires that a thin coat of wax be applied on the skin. Remove the wax immediately with a muslin, pellon, or cotton strip. Pull against hair growth.

19
Q

What are hard waxes and how do you apply them?

A

Hard waxes are available in blocks, pellets, or disks. They must be heated prior to application. The harder the wax, the more heat is required for melting.

Hard waxes are applied by layering to the thickness of a nickel in a figure 8 pattern. Allow it to harden for a few moments. Pull the wax against the hair growth. No strip is required.

20
Q

What is sugaring?

A

Sugaring is an ancient method of hair removal dating back to the Egyptians. The original recipe is a mixture of sugar, lemon juice, and water, heated to form a syrup. The mixture is molded into a ball and pressed onto the skin then quickly removed with the hair growth.

21
Q

What is threading?

A

Threading is an ancient method of hair removal practiced in eastern cultures. It works by using 100% cotton thread that is twisted and rolled along the surface of the skin, entwining the hair in the thread and lifting it out of the follicle.

22
Q

What is electrolysis?

A

Electrolysis is a process of permanently removing hair with the aid of electricity. The electrologist inserts a probe (a fine needle) into the hair follicle. The papilla is destroyed by galvanic (direct current) causing a chemical action, or high frequency causing electro coagulation. This treatment should only be done by a trained electrologist.

23
Q

What is laser hair removal?

A

Laser is the newest form of hair removal; it has only been around since the mid-1990’s. There are a variety of lasers available and updates are constant. A laser beam that has an attraction to pigment is pulsed on the skin, impairing the hair follicles. Laser has not been around long enough to be deems as permanent. It is therefore called permanent reduction.
