Hair Removal Flashcards
What structures are apart of the pilosebaceous unit?
- Follicle
- Hair root
- Hair bulb
- Hair papilla
- Attached arrector pili muscle and sebaceous glands
What are the main structures of the hair follicles?
- Hair root
- Hair shaft
Explain the 3 stages of the hair growth cycle.
Anagen phase- growth stage in which new hair is produced, new cells form hair and root sheaths while older hair is pushed up. The length of the phase determines the length of the hair.
Catogen- the transition stage. Mitosis ceases and hair loses inner root sheath and become dryer (results in club hair). It is the shortest part of hair growth cycle
Telogen- the final resting stage of hair growth and is ready to shed, hair is at full size and shows above skin surface and sits at the follicle or falls out.
Define Hirsutism and Hypertrichosis
Hirsutism- excessive hair growth on the face, arms, and legs, especially in women.
Hypertrichosis- excessive growth of hair in areas of the body that is normally covered by vellus hair.
Define electrolysis
Removal of hair by using an electric current that destroys hair roots.
Define threading and sugaring
Threading-cotton thread is twisted and rolled along the surface of the skin, entwining hair in the thread and lifting it out of the follicle
-Sugaring- mixture of sugar, lemon wax, and water that is heated up and once set will be molded into a ball , and pressed onto the skin and quickly stripped away.
What is photoepilation?
(intense pulsed light IPL) A process of permanent hair removal treatment that uses intense light to destroy growth cells of hair follicles.
Difference between epilation and depilation.
Depilation- process of hair removal at or near the level of skin
-main methods include shaving. and is individualized for each persons growth pattern
Epilation-removing hair from the bottom of the follicle by breaking contact between the bulb and the papilla.
-Tweezing, threading, sugaring and waxing
What are the two main types of waxing products?
Hard Wax (no strips) Soft Wax (strips needed)
What are 6 of the conditions, treatments, and medications that contraindicate hair removal
- Recent use of blood thinning medications
- Recent microdermabrasion or injectables
- Rosacea or very sensitive skin
- Skin disorders (eczema, psoriasis, seborrhea)
- Recent use of topical or oral cortisone medication
- Autoimmune disorders (AIDS, Lupus)
List 4 safety precautions that must be followed before waxing.
- Before waxing, be sure to complete a client consultation card and have client sign and read release form
- Do not remove vellus hair; it can cause hair to lose softness and uniformity.
- Test the temperature of the heated wax on the inside of the wrist before applying on the client.
- Redness and swelling is common on sensitive skin, make sure to apply aloe gel or cortisone cream to calm and soothe the skin
What are the 3 most important points in safe wax removal techniques?
- Hold the skin taut next to where you start and pull it parallel to the skin quickly.
- Stretch the skin out while holding, rather than applying too much pressure downward to the skin.
Why should you use a biohazard container for waste disposal?
If in case the clients blood touches any supplies and single-use items.
Why is hard wax better than soft wax for sensitive skin/areas?
They are gentle enough to be used on the face but also to remove coarse hairs. Preferred to be used on the bikini and underarm area.
