Hair Properties Flashcards
Short, fine, downy hair located on babies and the ‘hairless’ parts of an adults body except for palms of hands and soles of feet. Has no medulla, is not pigmented.
Vellus or Ianugo hair
Hair located on the scalp, legs, arms, and other parts of the body including eyelashes and eyebrows. Coarser than vellus hair, usually has a medulla (except grays and blondes), pigmented (except gray), comprising of dark colors.
Terminal hair
Tube like pocket in skin or scalp containing hair root. It surrounds the dermal papilla, is all over the body except the palms and soles of feet.
Follicle
Lowest area of hair strand, thickened club-shaped structure that forms the lower part of the hair root. The longer part of this section of the hair strand fits over and covers the dermal papilla.
Hair bulb
Small, cone-shaped area located at the base of the follicle, contains the blood and nerve supply that provides the hair with nutrients needed for hair growth
Dermal papilla
Tiny, involuntary muscle connected to each hair strand. Strong emotions or cold cause it to contract, making hair stand up and creating goosebumps.
Arrector pilli or erector muscle
A gland connected to the hair follicle that secretes sebum and lubricates the hair and skin
Sebaceous gland
Hair flowing in the same direction. Two streams flowing in opposite directions form a natural part
Hair stream
Hair that forms a circular pattern, usually in the crown
Whirl
Tuft of hair that stands straight up
Cowlick
Hair growth cycle within which new hair is produced. (One half inch to one inch per month), 90% of hair is produced in this phase. It lasts 3-5 years. The longer the cycle is, the longer the hair can grow, (which is why some people can only grow hair to a certain point before it stops growing entirely).
An agent
Hair growth cycle within which the hair is in a transitional phase. The canal shrinks and detaches from dermal papilla. The hair bulb disappears and the shrunken root forms a club. This stage lasts 1-2 weeks. Less than 1% of hair is in this phase at any one time.
Cartagena
This is the final resting hair growth phase. It lasts until fully grown hair pushes out in the anagen phase. 10% of hair is in this stage at any one time, and it lasts 3-6 months and repeats every 4-5 years
