HAI Flashcards
1
Q
What is a HAI?
A
Healthcare associated infection.
Within 48hrs of admission
2
Q
How can HAI’s be categorised?
A
By organism:
- MRSA
- E.coli
- C.Diff
By syndrome
- Catheter associated BSI
- Urinary catheter associated UTI
- Surgical site infection
- Ventilator associated pneumonia
3
Q
What is common syndrome of HAI?
A
Hospital acquired pneumonia
4
Q
What is C Diff?
A
Gram +ve spore forming anaerobe
5
Q
How is C Diff spread?
A
- Spores spread and contaminate environment for a long time.
- Ingested spores germinate in gut
6
Q
How are patients affected from C Diff?
A
- range from asymptomatic to mild diarrhea to severe colitis
- Attack rates higher in:
- older
- debilitated
- antibiotic treated
7
Q
What is the firrst line antibiotic for C Diff?
A
Oral Vancomycin
8
Q
What is the most common organism to cause UTI in community vs hospital?
A
E.Coli predominantly in community.
E.coli still most common in hospital but bigger spread of other organisms
9
Q
What is a common gram +ve cocci in clusters?
A
Staph aureus
10
Q
What are implications of patients with MRSA?
A
- Increased Morbidity
- Prolonged admission
- Prolonged antibiotics
- Isolation rooms
- Increased mortality
11
Q
What are the key strategies of infection control?
A
- measuring
- analysing
- improving infection control activities
- reduce infections
