Q

What is the pathophysiology of thrombosis

A

Initial stages:
Molecular level - small scale thrombin production
1. Tissue factor
TF bearing cells activate factors X and V forming prothrombinase complex
2. Prothrumbinase complex activates factor II (prothrombin) creating factor IIa (thrombin)
3. Antithrombin (AT-III) inactivates thrombin by breaking it back down to prothrombin
