Definition of Haemostasis

A

Keeping circulating blood inside the circulatory system maintaining fluidity stopping bleeds and damage to blood vessels.

What is a direct anti globulin test?

A

A test on the blood in the umilical cord if the mother is known to have had multiple antibodies in pregnancy.
Blood is obtained from the cord into a pink eta botle
must be labelled correctly with babies details
complete the form and print
send to the lab and await results

What happens if the babies DAT results are positive?

A

The baby may require serum bilirubin/FBC via NICU and treatment such as phototherapy (prophylactically)

In what instance would a fbc be taken post delivery to asses whether a transfusion is necessary?

A

If there was an EBL of 500mls+ or LSCS or if symptomatic. (ie tachycardic, sob, faint dizzy, increased resps etc.
