Haemostasis Flashcards
1
Q
How many pathways are there in the clotting cascade and what do they produce?
A
2 pathways that converge into a final common pathway that produces fibrin.
2
Q
What are the names of the pathways?
A
Intrinsic pathway (damaged surface) and extrinsic pathway (trauma)- converge to form the common pathway
3
Q
What converts fibrinogen to fibrin (the major component of a clot) in the common pathway?
A
Thrombin IIa
4
Q
What other role does thrombin have?
A
It activates platelets.
*The platelets then entangle in the long threads of fibrin and form clots.
