Haemoglobin Flashcards
What chains make up HbA2?
2 alpha and 2 delta
What chains makes up Adult Hb (HbA)?
2 alpha and 2 beta
What chains make up foetal Hb?
2 alpha and 2 gamma
Sickle cell disease is a mutation in which chain?
The beta chain in HbA
What does BPG do to Hb?
Stabilises it. No more O2 binds. Promotes dissociation
What is MetHb?
When Fe2+ is oxidised to Fe3+ and so O2 can’t bind
What are the 2 causes for the formation of MetHb?
- Spontaneous
2. Drug side effect
What keeps the levels of MetHb in check?
MetHb reductase
What is Glycosylated Hb (HbA1c)?
Where covalent bonds form between glucose and the beta chain in Hb when plasma glucose is high
What is Glycosylated Hb used for clinically?
To assess the plasma glucose levels of diabetics
What is cyanosis?
Poor Hb saturation
What is the difference between the 2 types of cyanosis?
- Central cyanosis - poor oxygenation in lungs
2. Peripheral cyanosis - poor tissue perfusion
What is Polycythaemia?
Increased Hb levels
What is anaemia?
Decreased Hb levels
What 3 ways is carbon dioxide carried around?
- Bicarbonate ion
- Carbamino CO2 (on globin chain)
- In plasma
