What is haematopoiesis?
A
- Production of the blood
- Occurs mainly in the bone marrow in adults (medullary haematopoiesis)
Can also occur in the liver, thymus and spleen (extra-medullary)

Where does haematopoiesis occur?
A
Flat bones (pelvis, vertebrae and sternum)

A
Haematopoietis stem cells acan turn into common lymphoid progenitor cells or common myeloid progenitor cells
Common lymphoids turn into lymphoblasts which become lymphocytes
Common myeloids turn into erythrocytes, thrombocytes and leukocytes

What do megakaryocytes give rise to?
A
Platelets - they rupture and release platelets into circulation

Where does haematopoiesis occur before birth?
A
Liver and spleen
By birth the bone marrow takes over
