What is the difference between sickle cell disease and sickle cell trait?
A
= Autosomal rec disease
Sickle cell trait = 1 copy of abnormal gene for beta-globulin (chromosome 11), no disease
Sickle cell disease = 2 copies of abnormal gene => HbS variant

How is sickle cell anaemia diagnosed?
A
Typically: mothers tested in pregnancy (sickle cell trait) and babies during heel prick test at 5 days of age
