Haematology Flashcards
What is the cut off for anaemia in men and women?
men <135g/dL
women <115g/dL
What causes anaemia?
Reduced production of RBCs or increased loss of RBCSs (haemolytic anaemias) or increased plasma volume (pregnancy)
What are the symptoms of anaemia?
fatigue dyspnoea headache faintness tinnitus anorexia palpitations
What are the signs of anaemia?
pallor
sever anaemia Hb <80g/dL: hyperdynamic circulation: tachycardia and flow murmus
Ejectio-systolic murmum loudest over the apex
–> heart failure
What does anaemia with high MVC mean?
there is decreased production of red blood cells
e.g. folate or b12 deficiency- which are required for blood cell production
What does anaemia with low MVC mean?
normal number of RBCs (not always) but there is not much to go in them E.g. iron deficiency, thalassaemia
