What causes anaemia?

A

Reduced production of RBCs or increased loss of RBCSs (haemolytic anaemias) or increased plasma volume (pregnancy)

A
fatigue 
dyspnoea 
headache 
faintness

What are the signs of anaemia?

A

pallor
sever anaemia Hb <80g/dL: hyperdynamic circulation: tachycardia and flow murmus
Ejectio-systolic murmum loudest over the apex
–> heart failure

What does anaemia with high MVC mean?

A

there is decreased production of red blood cells

e.g. folate or b12 deficiency- which are required for blood cell production

What does anaemia with low MVC mean?

A

normal number of RBCs (not always) but there is not much to go in them E.g. iron deficiency, thalassaemia
