Habitats and Interactions Flashcards
Abiotic factors
Non-living factors in the environment
Apex predator
Predator that has no natural predators except humans
Biological control
A method of controlling unwanted pests by using a natural predator or disease
Biosphere
The place where all life exists; consists of Earth and its atmosphere
Biotic factors
Living factors in the environment
Carnivore
A consumer that eats only other animals
Herbivore
A consumer that only eats plants.
Omnivore
A consumer that eats both plants and animals.
Where do all plants get their energy from?
The sun
Why is the sun included in food chains when they aren’t organisms?
The sun is not an organism but it is the original energy source.
What is the process that turns water and carbon dioxide into oxygen called?
Photosynthesis
What chemical is used by plants to trap the energy from the sun?
Chlorophyll
What do the arrows in a food chain show?
The energy flow.
What is always at the start of every food chain?
The sun
Where do all animals get their energy?
Other organisms
What are producers and why are plants producers?
Producers are organisms that can make their own food. Plants are producers because all plants can produce their own food from the sun.
What are consumers and why are animals consumers?
Consumers need to consume other organisms to get the energy they need. All animals are consumers because all animals cannot produce their own food.
What’s are decomposers? Give two examples of decomposers.
Decomposers (Eg. Bacteria and fungi) are organisms that break down dead matter and waste then return it to the soil. Decomposers are extremely important because they prevent our dead matter from building up and they give plants the nutrients they need.
