Habitat Flashcards
The range of environments in which a given species occurs: this could be a wide set of environments, therefore
Two completely different environments could be described as the same habitat.
Example: eels occur in a wide variety of habitats throughout their lives, such as ponds, wet grasslands, tropical waters and ocean waters.
Habitat can be defined in two ways:
The range of environments in which a given species occurs
Or
A distinct unit in the landscape, supporting a distinct community of organisms.
The range of environments in which a given species occurs: (2)
This may vary with specific sites.
Can be used to classify and map areas of wildlife interest.
A distinct unit in the landscape, supporting a distinct community of organisms: example -
Grassland can be subdivided into
Chalk grassland, grassy heath, grazing marsh, damp hay meadow, fen meadow.
A distinct unit in the landscape, supporting a distinct community of organisms: A broad habitat can be…
