Work safe New Zealand.
What are my responsibilities as a worker?
Must take reasonable care of their own health and safety. Reasonable that others are not harmed by something they do or do not do. Must follow reasonable instructions given by the PCBU (persons conducting a business or undertaking)
What section dictates the maximum penalty for exposing an individual and what is said penalty?
Section 48
$150,000 fine
What section dictates the maximum penalty for reckless conduct and what is said penalty?
Section 47
5 years in prison or $300,000 fine / or both

What are the control measures for a spill?
- Minor spill: Small quantities if chemicals which can be cleaned up using kitty litter
- Major spill: will require more spill material such as #M chemical sorbent pads and / or chemical sorbent mini brooms.
To deal with spills, all laboratories must have a prepared spill kit in an accessible area. The location of the kit must clearly be displayed and signed.
SDS contains: the materials required for containing and removing liquids. Appropriate disposal. PPE to be worn.
What are the control measures for handling and transport of chemicals?
Safety trolleys should be used transporting plastic or glass containers of hazardous substances with a capacity of 2 L or more.
What are the control measures for electrical hazards?
Disconnect and have it checked by a competent person immediately
Damaged flex and connections are dangerous
What are the control measures for alternative light source?
Operator must be properly trained
Safety goggles must be worn
Clearly label all protective eyewear and ensure all important information is available such as wavelengths and appropriate protection.
What are the control measures for storing hazardous substances in the lab?
Keep quantities to a minimum
Keep incompatible substances segregated (All flammable substances separate from oxidisers)
Chemicals should not be stored on bench tops
