Pelvic Inflammation Disease (PID)

A

Infection of the Female upper reproductive organs. Effects primarily women 20-24 yrs

Usually caused by:
STI, specifically Neisseria gonorrheae , Chlamydia trachomatis.

•Staphylococci and Streptococci are usually the results of surgery

Ovarian Cyst

A

A fluid filled sac that forms on an ovary.

May mimic an ectopic pregnancy

  • May rupture (most commonly 1 week prior to menstrual bleeding is to begin)
  • Ruptured cyst can result in one sided localized abd pain and cause signs of peritonitis if hemorrhage has occurred.

Dysmenorrhea

A

pain during menstruation.

Most often occurs in women who are not sexually active and who have not borne children.

Endometriosis

A

Occurs when endometrial tissue grows outside the uterus

  • Generally grow on the surface of abdominal and pelvic organs
  • May have no symptoms or can cause severe pain(lower back, pelvic and abdominal regions)
  • Causes painful coitus, painful menstruation, and heavy periods
  • Unable to conceive (30-40% of women)
