Corpus
main body of the uterus
Cervix
neck of the uterus; in childbirth, cervix dilates to let fetus out of uterus
3 phases of menstruation
Follicular Phase- Ovaries produce oocytes
Ovulatory Phase – egg captured in fallopian tube
Luteal Phase- If egg fertilized, moves to uterus via fallopian tube
PID Shuffle
A sign of Pelvic Inflammatory Disease.
Patient bent over usually clutching abdomen and shuffeling slowly.
Pelvic Inflammation Disease (PID)
Infection of the Female upper reproductive organs. Effects primarily women 20-24 yrs
Usually caused by:
STI, specifically Neisseria gonorrheae , Chlamydia trachomatis.
•Staphylococci and Streptococci are usually the results of surgery
Cystitis
An inflamed or irritated bladder caused by a bacterial infection.
Signs and Symptoms
Menarche
First menstrual cycle.
Triad of Ectopic Pregnancy
Pain
Amenorrhea
Vaginal bleeding (any)
Maxeran
Increases GI motility
Fundus
uppermost part of the uterus, above the attachment of the fallopian tubes
Ovarian Cyst
A fluid filled sac that forms on an ovary.
May mimic an ectopic pregnancy
- May rupture (most commonly 1 week prior to menstrual bleeding is to begin)
- Ruptured cyst can result in one sided localized abd pain and cause signs of peritonitis if hemorrhage has occurred.
Dysmenorrhea
pain during menstruation.
Most often occurs in women who are not sexually active and who have not borne children.
HA, backache, dizziness, faintness, N/V, syncope, leg pain.
Mittelschmerz
“middle pain”. Pain from the rupture of the graafian follicle and bleeding from the ovary during menstrual cycle.
Endometritis
Inflammation of the endometrium.
Symptoms:
- Malaise
- Fever
- Lower abdominal pain
- Vaginal Bleeding
- Pelvic Pain
- purulent vaginal discharge
Endometriosis
Occurs when endometrial tissue grows outside the uterus
- Generally grow on the surface of abdominal and pelvic organs
- May have no symptoms or can cause severe pain(lower back, pelvic and abdominal regions)
- Causes painful coitus, painful menstruation, and heavy periods
- Unable to conceive (30-40% of women)
