Gustation Flashcards
what are the 5 tastes?
sweet, sour, umami, salty, bitter
what is umami?
glutamate
savoury/ meaty taste
what’s different about type II/III neurons to normal neurons?
no dendrites/axons
no APs
what is Type I cell?
a glial cell
what channels are working in Type II and III neurons?
sodium potassium exchange- pulling potassium in and pushing sodium out
potassium leak- allows K+ out to establish potential
what tastes do type III detect?
sour
what do type II detect?
sweet, umami, bitter
what type of receptor is used by type II cells?
GPCR
give the general chain of events when ligand binds GPCR in type II cell
G-alpha dissociates from GDP and binds GTP
this causes it to dissociate from B/y to form 2 subunits
GB/y subunit activates phospholipase C
which activates IP3
IP3 binds IP3
