guilt and regret Flashcards
‘how tedious…’
’ how tedious is a guilty conscience’ - Cardinal
‘Do you not weep?
Other sins ….’
Do you not weep?
Other sins only speak; murder shrieks out.
- Bosola to Ferdinand looking at the dead body of the duchess
- shows he understands the gravity of the murder
“The wolf shall find her grave…
“The wolf shall find her grave, and scrape it up”
Ferdinand’s guilt after killing the Duchess is so strong that he believes he is a wolf. This sudden change from sane to insane emphasises the effect that guilt can have on mental health.
“Where were These penitent ….
“Where were These penitent fountains while she was living?”
-Bosola in Act 4 Scene 2. Tears are out of character for him. Guilt + Transformation.
‘cover her face…
‘cover her face.mine eyes dazzle! she died too young’
- his eyes may ‘dazzle’ with tears or he may be ‘dazzled’ by her beauty
“I would pray now, but the devil …
“I would pray now, but the devil takes away my heart for having any confidence in prayer.”
Ironic corruption of his title; eventual impact of remorse and guilt; blasphemous; anguished soliloquy
Lack of faith in religion, and cyclical reference to the “devil” again - the Cardinal fulfils Bosola’s remark about him.
The idea of Fate and how the Cardinal fulfils it by the end
