A rapidly progressing inflammatory disease that results in demyelination of peripheral nerves

-typically begins as weakness in legs and ascends to trunk and arms symptoms usually subside by the fourth week and diminish in reverse order
-if swallowing or breathing become involved during disease process, condition becomes life threatening (occurs in ~30% of cases)
-if nerve cell body remains alive through acute period, regeneration of peripheral nerve occurs. If not, recovery of motor function is unlikely and person experiences permanent disability (5-10% of cases)
-all age groups affected, most common in young adults and elderly

-precise cause unknown, but appears to be related to an autoimmune response ushered in by a preceding viral infection or immunization

-often notices numbness and tingling of feet and hands during onset
-followed by progressive muscle weakness that begins in legs, travels up trunk and down arms and up to face (ascending paralysis)-this occurs within 24-72 hours
as condition proceeds upwards, vision and speech may be impaired
