Guidelines Relating To Antimicrobials And Their Use In Clinical Practice Flashcards
Definition of antibiotic guidelines
Give advice about what antimicrobials should be preserved for a specific clinical condition and are based on the best available evidence.
Definition of formulary
Limited list of drugs available for prescription
Definition of antimicrobial policy
Set of statements about an organisations strategy for promoting prudent antimicrobial prescribing.
Contain guidelines about treatment of specific conditions (based on national guidelines) also factoring in information about locally prevalent organisms and their resistance patterns.
Who makes us the MDT that develop local abx policies
Clinician, microbiologist, pharmacist, infection control
Activities that occur at a local level to formulate antibiotic policies
Review local prevalent organisms and sensitivity patterns, review clinical evidence for efficacy,
Review prescription levels and duration of treatment
What do the NICE guidelines set out to do?
Set up in 1999
Reduce variation in the availability and quality of nhs treatments and care.
Offers guidance on patient care, therapy, treatments e.g. Bacterial meningitis and meningococcal septicaemia.
What is BSAC?
The British society for antimicrobial chemotherapy.
Inter professional organisation.
Facilitate the acquisition and dissemination of knowledge about antimicrobial chemotherapy.
What is BHIVA?
The British HIV association represents professionals in HIV care. Excellence in the care of those living with and affected HIV.
Two aims of antibiotic stewardship
To ensure that patients with bacterial infections receive prompt, effective treatment.
To minimise the risk of collateral damage (adverse effect on normal flora, selection of resistant organisms, abx effects) by selecting the right drug and duration of treatment for those with infection and avoiding unnecessary treatment of patients who will not benefit.
