Guided Weapons Flashcards
1
Q
Role and categories (4, 10)
A
- Air-to-Air Missile (AAM):
* Short Range. Often referred to as Within Visual Range (WVR).
* Long Range. Often referred to as Beyond Visual Range (BVR) - Air-to-Surface Missile (ASM):
* Tactical. Not capable of delivering NBC warheads.
* Strategic. Capable of delivering NBC warheads. - Surface-to-Air Missile (SAM).
* Hand held. Often referred to as Man Portable Air Defence (MANPAD).
* Short Range Air Defence (SHORAD).
* Long Range. - Surface-to-Surface Missile (SSM). There are 3 categories of SSM:
* Anti-Armour.
* Tactical.
* Strategic.
2
Q
Components of a GW (4)
A
- Guidance section.
- Control section.
- Warhead section.
- Propulsion section
3
Q
Three types of guidance
A
- Homing
- Command
- Pre-set
4
Q
Types of homing (3)
A
- Radar homing (Composite/dissimilar material cone)
- Infra-Red (Clear or opaque/smoked glass dome with silver mirror)
- Laser homing (Clear glass with gold mirror)
5
Q
Types of command guidance (4)
A
- Wire Command (up to 5km, only for SSM Anti-armour
- Radio Command (Multiple antennas to keep signal when manouvring) - Always ASM or SAM
- Beam-riding (Rear facing glass windows/black squares. SAM hand-held or SSM anti-armour.
- Electro-optical (TV guidance, camera and large glass dome) Only ASM
6
Q
Types of pre-set guidance (4)
A
- Inertial (Uses gyroscopes (V1&2) - Least suitable for precision accuracy)
- Celestial (Only in ICBMs or Intermediate range BMs (IRBMS) - SSM strategic
- GPS (V Acurate but can be jammed) - ASM, SSM Tac and Strat or Guided HE bombs
- Terrain Comparison (TERCOM) (Stored radar map of programmed flight path and compares to actual flight) ASM and SSM Strat.
7
Q
Guidance Section Hazards (5)
A
- Radio Frequency (RF) emissions
- High voltages
- High-pressure coolants
- Toxins
- Carcinogens.
8
Q
Control Section Functions (2)
A
- Steers Weapon
- Provides power and cooling to other sections
9
Q
Control section components (4)
A
- Weapon Steering (Either moveable control surface or altering angle of propulsion exhaust.
- Rollerons (Like mini gryoscopes) - Usally on AAM Short range
- Steering power. (Power source to move control surfaces, pneumatics or hydraulics)
- Electrical power. (Thermal. wet or dry cell batteries or turbo-generator) - Powers guidance and warhead.
9
Q
Control section components (3)
A
- Weapon Steering (Either moveable control surface or altering angle of propulsion exhaust.
- Rollerons (Like mini gryoscopes) - Usally on AAM Short range
- Steering power.
10
Q
Warhead section components (3)
A
- Fuze
- Safety and arming device (SAD)
- Warhead/payload itself
11
Q
Guided Weapon Fuzing options (3)
A
- Contact Fuzing (Break wires, piezo-electric or crush switches)
- Proximity (Side looking as well as front and underside looking - RF, laser and Active IR). On AAM and SAM
- Self-Destruct fuzing (To deny to EN if weapon fails to function, Operate on loss of command sig, time delay or power run down) - All AAM and SAM
12
Q
Safety Arming Device (SAD) Functions (3)
A
- Provides safety breaks before weapon launch.
- Arms the weapon after launch.
- Links the fuze or fuzes to the warhead
13
Q
Types of warhead (4)
A
- Armour Defeating (Sometime tandem charges for ERA)
- Anti aircraft (Annular blast fragmentation, expanding rod warhead.
- Stratigic & Missile (Possibly NBC)
- Other Warhead Types (Anti-ship, Semi-armourpiercing, submunitions, blast, frag, thermobaric (Fuel/air), shot.)
