Guided Missiles Flashcards
Missiles are classified under what?
Launch environment mission vehicle type range and speed
What are the characteristics of a guided missile?
Sufficient speed to catch target
Maneuverable in flight to intercept target
Capable of enough damage to the target
Have acceptable range/altitude to be effective
Must be safe to store and use
And satisfactory launching
Subsonic is up to what?
.8 Mach
Transonic is what speeds?
.8 -1.2 Mach
Supersonic is what speeds?
1.2-5.0 Mach is supersonic
Hypersonic is up to what speed?
5.0 Mach and more
If an aircraft is traveling at 3.0 Mach and it fires a missile that goes 2.0 Mach ,how much is the speed of the missile going toward the target?
3.0 Mach and 2.0 Mach is 5.0 Mach as you combine the two
What two types of guided missiles are there?
Service and non service
What does a blue missile mean?
Practice missiles are painted blue
What parts make up a missile?
Guidance, control, warhead, and propulsion
Describe active homing?
Active homing is “smart”it doesn’t need any help to locate the target .it is a shoot and forget missile homing
Describe semi active homing?
Semi active homing is mediocre smart,it needs a little bit of help from an outside source ie laser painted or transmitted by aircraft
Describe passive homing?
Passive is the stupidest of all the target itself has to direct the missile to itself I e it sends out infrared or radar signals
What is an AIM 7 missile?
AIM 7 is sparrow guided missile is semi active
What is AGM 84?
AGM 84 is slam or harpoon missile .it is typically fired from f18 or p3.
What is AIM 9?
AIM 9 is sidewinder guided missile. It is supersonic with passive infrared homing.fired from f18
AIM 120 is called advanced medium range air to air missile.what air craft is it fired from?
F18 fires AIM 120 AMRAAM
