Q

Marxists and environmentalism (Guha and Martinez-Alier, 1997)

A

Some Marxists saw environmentalism as something for the super class, aka a post-materialist concern. It can be argued that wealth increases appreciation of environmental values, and also that wealth is good for the environment. Southern Marxists rejected environmentalists critiques as they thought it was a Western plot to keep the third world underdeveloped

Q

Do Guha and Martinez-Alier (2017) believe the poor or the wealthy damage the environment

A

The poor can damage the environment through use of common pool resources, and use of forests for firewood and deforestation. However wealth is a greater threat to the environment than poverty

Q

Briggs 2009

A

Briggs (2009) states that the environmental revolution is the term given to the use of high-yielding varieties of wheat and rice particularly during the 60s to increase food crop production, especially in India. It did increase total production in India, it didn’t in Africa, as both wheat and rice are relatively unimportant crops in Africa. It also had negative consequences such as loss of biodiversity, lowering water table, and increased rural inequalities.
