contemporary study on AN
1
Q
what was the aim?
A
- to investigate whether problems in judging body actions occurred only when judging one’s own body or if it was overall an judgement problem.
2
Q
ethics
A
- approved by an independent ethics committee.
- each ppt. was able to consent.
- parental consent was given for those under 18.
3
Q
participants
A
- 50 young females, all students from Lille, France.
- 25 from AN clinic, 25 healthy
4
Q
how were participants matched?
A
age and education
5
Q
mean ages
A
- 23.84 in AN group
- 24.48 in control group
6
Q
mean education levels (years after primary)
A
- 13.16 in AN group
- 13.8 in control group
7
Q
mean Body Shape Questionnaire (BSQ) scores
A
- 123.96 in AN group
- 66.708 in control group
8
Q
experimental procedure
A
- 51 different openings from 30cm-80cm were projected onto a wall in random order
- Each opening was presented 4 times
- The opening reached the floor so that it looked like a door
9
Q
first person perspective (1PP)
A
- ppts. judged whether their own body would fit through the opening
- they had to imagine themselves walking through and say if they could walk through without turning sideways
10
Q
third person perspective (3PP)
A
- ppts. had to imagine the experimenter going through the opening
- could move to get better view
- had to say whether experimenter could walk through without turning
11
Q
the experimenter
A
- 28 years old
- 1.60m tall
- 52 kg
- 38cm shoulder width
- stood 5.9m from wall projection
12
Q
1PP results
A
- mean ratio for AN group = 1.321
- mean ratio for control = 1.106
13
Q
3PP results
A
- mean ratio for AN group = 1.227
- mean ratio for control = 1.137
14
Q
significant difference?
(controls)
A
controls showed no significant diff. between 1PP & 3PP
15
Q
significant difference?
(AN group)
A
- rated their own body differently from how they rated the experimenter’s body
- also rated their own bodies differently to how controls rated their own bodies.
