GTE Abnormalities Flashcards
Hot Start
When fuel introduced while compressor RPM is TOO LOW
- Fuel burns at high temps in the combustion chamber with little to no aft flow
- this condition can overheat and ruin an engine in seconds
Hung Start
When there is a starter-motor malfunction (high DA, insufficient electrical power, etc)
- The engine ignites but for some reason it gets ‘hung’ at an RPM that’s TOO LOW and doesn’t continue to accelerate to Ground Idle
Tailpipe Fire
When fuel pools in the combustion section casing and exhaust section during start-up and then ignites all at once (usually due to bad engine igniters)
No Lightoff
When fuel is introduced into the combustion chamber, but the high-voltage spark produced by the igniters does not create combustion
*make sure igniter switch is in the correct position (not off)
No Starter Cutout
When the starter motor remains in the “start” position even when commanded “off”
*A catastrophic failure can occur if the starter is not disengaged
