Grudem Chapter 9 Flashcards
How does Grudem say that we know God exists?
1) Humanity’s Inner Sense of God
2) Evidence Is Found In Scripture and Nature
What passage of Scripture Inherently recognizes man’s inner sense of God?
Romans 1:21-25
What is one cause that Paul notes that leads people to deny the existence of God?
Sin.
What, in nature, gives evidence of the existence of God?
Everything.
What, in Scripture, gives evidence of the existence of God?
Everything.
What are the four traditional proofs (or arguments) for the Existence of God?
1) The Cosmological Argument.
2) The Teleological Argument
3) The Ontological Argument
4) The Moral Argument
Describe the Cosmological Argument for the existence of God.
Every known thing in the universe has a cause. Therefore, the universe itself must have a cause. The only cause of such a great universe can be God.
Describe the Teleological Argument for the existence of God.
Since the universe seems to be designed with a purpose, there must be an intelligent and purposeful God who created it to function this way.
Describe the Ontological Argument for the existence of God.
There is an idea of God who is defined as being greater than which nothing can be imagined. Since it is greater to exist than not to exist, the characteristic of existence must belong to such a being.
Describe the Moral Argument for the existence of God.
Humans have a sense of right and wrong and a need for justice to be done. There must be a God who is a source of right and wrong and who will give out justice to all people.
What are the aforementioned proofs God for?
Overcoming the intellectual objections of believers. Not bringing people to Christ.
Can man persuade himself of God’s existence?
No, Only God can overcome our sin and enable us to be persuaded of HIs existence.
