describe how radio changed:
-easier to listen to radio in private through long life battery and earphones which meant the youth didn’t have to listen to what their parents listened to
-birth of pirate radio stations e.g. radio caroline
-radio 1 started after pirate stations were banned in 1967
describe how newspapers changed:
-the sun launched in 1964 and it became very popular
-it was then bought in the late 60s by media tycoon rupert murdoch, which led to it becoming right-leaning and distorted the national balance of newspapers
-2/3rds of the adult pop. read a daily newspaper, proving it to be a powerful medium for public information
describe how public transport changed:
-1st stretch of the M1 opened in 1959
-but no major improvements to roads
-beeching report recommended cuts to railways lines which led to the railway lines being cut from 13,000km to 9,000km
-bus, coach and rail declined in popularity

-accelerated rapidly in the 60s
-use of the car account for 77% of journeys by 1974
-car ownership was more affordable due to technological advances, increase in real wages and increased mass production
-it led to an increase in leisure activities too
-in 1959 the austin mini was launched and it cost £495 meaning it was affordable for most families
describe how leisure and holidays changed:
-by 1955, 90% of british workers took an annual 2 week holiday
-butlins became popular
-travel companies offering package holidays brought domestic and foreign travel within the range of ordinary families
-shopping became a leisure activity
- in 1951 there were 27mil holidays but by 1971 there were 41 million
-however foreign travel was mainly for the rich
