Basically average for age
What does 1% centile mean?
Shorter, weighs less, smaller head circumference than 99% of population
What does a 95% centile mean?
Taller, weighs more, greater head circumference than 95% of children that age.
It is important for a child to do what in regards to centile?
Maintain their centile
What are the phases of growth for children?
first two years: growth driven by nutritional factors
2 years to puberty: steady slow growth
during puberty: rapid growth driven by hormones
Overweight is defined as?
a BMI over the 85th percentile
Obesity in children results from?
consuming more calories than expended through activity and growth
Obesity is defined as?
a BMI over the 95th percentile
Why has obesity increased?
acess to readily available, affordable, hyperpalatable, high calorie foods and overconsumption, shift from physical activities to sedentary activities

Tall for age, and come from overweight families

endocrine investigations for underlying cause like hypothyroidism

bullying
