Growth and Development Flashcards
What is Growth?
Growth is an irreversible increase in size and form that is measurable.
What is Development?
Development has to do with changes in structure and function in an organism
Cell elongation
Increase in the size of cells
What is Cell differentiation?
It is when cells undergo changes in their structure in accordance with their specific functions.
What is responsible for the increase in size of plants during the early stages?
The Meristematic tissue (in the shoot and root tip)
What are the 2 phases of plant growth?
Primary &
Secondary growth
Primary growth is caused by?
The activity of the Primary Meristem tissue
Secondary growth is caused by?
The activity of the Secondary Meristem tissue
Embryology
Stages of the embryo and the study of animal development.
Stages of Embryology
•Fertilization
•Implantation
•Cleavage
What is Fertilization?
It is the formation of egg and sperm to form the diploid zygote.
What is Implantation?
It is when the zygote migrate to the uterus and attaches itself to a spot.
What is Cleavage?
It is the mitotic cell division of the zygote.
At what stage does the embryo blastomers become the Morula?
32 cells stage
What happens during Gastrulation?
The embryo begins to approximate it’s body parts, as cells arrange themselves in distinct layers.
