Cargo of crude oil to be shipped to Europe by a subsidiary company who gave it to another subsidiary company and during the voyage it sank. Parent company tried to sue subsidiary however courts held they had separate legal personalities and therefore they had no title to sue, only subsidiary company could sue

There were very limited exception in these circumstances
DHN were the parent and they owned a subsidiary that did nothing but held land to trade off
They could claim compensation and sue when the land was required by compulsory purchase
