A collection of people in the same place who do not share a psychological connection with each other.
Physical Group
A collection of people who share a psychological connection with each other and who are not necessarily in the same place.
Psychological Group
Group members dependence on each other in terms of their experiences actions or outcomes.
Interdepedence
People who share a group indentity based on a shared idea, passion or perspective
Imagined Community
Social identity is the part(s) of a person’s identity which is based on their group membership.
Social Identity.
The Sense of self which is based on a person’s individual (Physical, psychological, interpersonal) characteristics.
Personal Identity
The process of closely associating the self with a social identity.
Social Identification
The social identity which is active or prominent in a specific context.
Salient Identity
Identities that are given to a person, in which they do not have a choice.
Assigned Identities
Identities that are chosen by a person.
Acquired Identities
A person’s sense of confidence in their own worth.
Self-esteem
Shared standards of behaviour in a group.
Social Norms
The loss of rational thinking in a crowd.
Submergence
The spread of behaviours, emotions and attitudes from one person to another
Contagion
A way of influencing another which bypasses their conscious thinking.
Suggestion
A system of government where a country is ruled by citizens and their elected representatives.
Republic
A system of government headed by a king or queen. Monarchs are born into the role (or take it by force) rather than elected.
Monarchy
A process whereby the feelings and behaviours of surrounding crowd members affect the feelings and behaviours of the indivdual.
Mutual Intensification
Agitate means ‘to stir’; an agitator is a person who encourages others to escalate thir behaviour.
Agitators
A group of people with a shared social identity.
Ingroup
A group of people who have a social identity which is different to the ingroup.
Outgroup
Favourable treatment of those with the same social identity.
Ingroup Bias
Leadership which engages followers through a shared social identity.
Indentity Leadership
A political approach which presents problems as a conflict between ‘ordinary people’ and ‘the elite’. Those currently in power are usually presented as corrupt and illegitimate.
Populism
Occasions when the presence of others makes indivdual performance better or easier.
Social Facilitation
Occasions when the presence of others negatively affects individual performances.
Social Inhibition
Occasions when being part of a group reduces individual effort.
Social Loafing
The statistical analysis of results pooled from a number independent studies.
