Groups and Rows on the Periodic Table Flashcards
Group 1
-Alkali Metals
-Located on the far left side of the Periodic Table (Don’t need to memorize)
-Physical Properties: Soft, silvery white, lustrous metals
-Good conducters of heat and electricity
-Chemical Properties: *Most reactive group of metals, reacts with oxygen and water, and reacts with halogens (Group 17)
Group 2
-Alkaline Earth Metals
-Located on the left side of the Periodic Table
-Physical Properties: Soft, silvery white, lustrous metals
-Good conducters of heat and electricity
-Chemical Properties: *2nd most reactive group
-Reacts with water and halogens (Group 17)
Groups 3-12
-Transition Metals
-Physical Properties: Dense Metals, high Melting and Boiling Point, lustrous, malleable, and ductile
-Good conducter of heat and electricity
-3 magnetic metals: Fe (Iron), Co (Cobalt), Ni (Nickel)
Group 17
-Halogens
-Physical Properties: Low Melting and Boiling Points
-Halogens are able to produce salt
-Only group that contains all the basic states of matter
-Poor conducters of heat and electricity
-Chemical Properties: *Most reactive Non-metals
Basic States of Matter: Solids, liquids, and gases
Group 18
-Noble Gases
-Physical Properties: Non-metals, poor conducters of heat and electricity, and colorless, oderless gases
-Chemical Properties- They don’t react! They are intert
-They have full valence (outer) shell of electrons and do not want to interact with other elements
-Used to stabilize chemical reactions
Row 6
-Lanthinides
-Rare earth metals
-(58-71)
-Used to make magnetic and electronic devices
Row 7
-Actinides
-Rare earth metals
-All are radioactive: some used in cancer therapy
-Some are not made in nature (synthetic/man-made in lab)
-(90-103)
