People who share similar characteristics but are not tied to one another in any way
Aggregate/crowd
People who exist in the place at the same time but don’t share a sense of identity with each other
Primary Groups
Made up of individuals who generally engage face-to-face in long term emotional ways.
Expressive Function
A group function that serves an emotional need
Secondary group
Often larger and impersonal, mostly task focused and time limited.
Instrumental Function
A group function that serves to complete a task or a goal
In-group
The group that an individual feels they belong to
Out-group
The group that an individual feels they don’t belong to.
Reference Group
A group that people compare themselves to.
Dyad
A two member group. Cannot exist if one leaves.
Triad
Three member group. If one leaves the group can still exist
Leadership function
Refers to the main focus or goal of the leader
Leader
Someone who influences others in a group
Instrumental leader
Focused on a groups goals. Gives orders and makes plans to accomplish those goals.
Expressive leader
Looking to increase harmony and minimize conflict within the group.
