Groups Flashcards
Name 3 element in group 0
Helium
Neon
Argon
Why is helium different to the rest of the element in group 0
Helium only has two electrons on its outer shell wheat as the others have eight
What happens to the boiling point as u go down the group
The boiling point gets higher
Name 4 properties of group 1 elements
They are metals
They have a low density
Form ions with a charge of +1
React with chlorine to form solid ionic chlorides
What happens as you go down group 1
Gets more reactive and the the melting and boiling points get lower
Properties of transition metals
Have higher densities
Have higher melting points and boiling points
Are stronger and harder
Are much less reactive with oxygen and halogens
What is ionic bonding
When there is an electrostatic attraction between a positively charged ion and negatively charged ion
What is covalent bonding
When a non metal and non metal join together, sharing electrons
What is metallic bonding
Where the atom lose their outer shell electrons forming ions
The ions will be in a 3d arrangement called LATTICE
metallic bonding only occurs in metals and alloys
State what groups lose and gain electrons
Group 1- lose 1 electron to form +1 ions
Group 2- lose 2 electrons to form +2 ions
Group 6 gain 2 electrons to form -2 ions
Group 7 gain 1 electron to form -1 ions
