They are termed major contact or lexical because they carry most of the content or meaning of a sentence.
Open word class • Meaning
They are also called open because new words can still be added to these classes.
Example : The Word catfish, which was recently added to the dictionary.

Minor or Grammatical • Meaning
They are termed minor grammatical because they tend to perform grammatical functions such as relating expressions to each other.
Closed Word Class • Meaning
They are called close cases as no new words would be added to these groups in the future.
