What is fluorosis?
Excess intake of fluoride and causes discolouration
Why does excess fluoride toothpaste not cause fluorosis?
Fluorosis occurs during amelogenesis
What is the optimal fluoride intake? (For adults)
1450ppm
What special investigations may be used for caries?
Radiographs (bitewing, apical)
BPE
Diet diary
Disclosing tablets
Test acidity
Test salivary slow rate
Test saliva buffering capacity
Test lactobacillus count
Why do caries appear white?
Enamel demineralisation creates a less dense/ more porous structure of crystallites. This causes water to enter crystallites and create a white effect.
It is no longer translucent
Why do caries appear close to the gingival margin?
Poor brushing techniques
When else is it common to get white spot lesions on anterior teeth (clue often in younger patients)?
Orthodontic appliances -difficult cleaning around braces
How to know if a caries lesion is active or inactive?
Using a probe
A leathery, hard lesion is inactive
A soft, sticky lesion is still active
What is a possible treatment for a fractured tooth?
RCT then post-crown
What is a OPT?
PANORAMIC
What are OPTs helpful for?
To see retained roots
What are bitewings best for?
Mesial/distal caries
What is the normal pattern of caries?
Pits/fissures
Interproximal
Why do smooth surface caries occur?
Occur due to poor Toothbrushing habits
What can attrition look like in the incisal teeth?
Cupping in the incisal surfaces
