Group two Flashcards
What is the name given to Group Two elements ?
Alkaline earth metals
Explain the reactivity of Group Two and why .
The reactivity of the elements in Group II increases down the group because the attraction between the positive nucleus and the negative valence electrons is less.
Which element is least reactive and which is most reactive in group two?
Beryllium is least reactive
Radium is most reactive
What is Group two chemical reactivity with the following:
โขOxygen
โขWater
โขHydrochloric acid
1) They react with oxygen to form basic oxides
2) They react with water to form metal hydroxides and hydrogen gas.
3) They react with dilute hydrochloric acid to form salts know as metal chlorides and hydrogen gas
List 5 General properties of Group Two
1) They are fairly soft metals
2) Their atoms have two valence electrons
3) Going down the group, the radii of the atoms increase, and it becomes easier for the atoms to lose their two valence electrons.
4) They have fairly high melting points and boiling points,
5) Their atoms lose their valence electrons readily to form metal cations
Why does reactivity increases down Group Two?
Moving down, the atomic radii gets bigger due to the extra electron shells, as a result the attraction between the positive nuclear and the negative valence electrons is less.
State which element is most reactive and which element is least reactive in Group Two.
Most reactive - Radium
Least reactive - Beryllium
State the elements in Group Two
Beryllium
Magnesium
Calcium
Strontium
Barium
Radium
How does the ease of ironition increase?
The ease of ironition increases moving down group two
What is ironise?
An element losing/gaining electrons
How are positive cations form in group two?
Group two elements react by losing two valence electrons to form positive cations
