Group 7- The Halogens Flashcards

1
Q

What are the trends in group 7?

A

As you go down, they become LESS REACTIVE and have HIGHER MELTING AND BOILING POINTS.

Q

Why do the Halogens become less reactive as you go down?

A

Because it is HARDER to gain an extra electron because the outer shell is further away from the nucleus.

Q

What do they displace?

A

A more reactive halogen will displace a less reactive one from an aqueous solution of its salt. eg chlorine will displace bromine and iodine from and aqueous solution of its salt ( a bromide or iodide)
