Group 7- The Halogens Flashcards
1
Q
What are the trends in group 7?
A
As you go down, they become LESS REACTIVE and have HIGHER MELTING AND BOILING POINTS.
2
Q
Why do the Halogens become less reactive as you go down?
A
Because it is HARDER to gain an extra electron because the outer shell is further away from the nucleus.
3
Q
What do Halogens form?
A
Coloured vapours: Fluorine-Yellow gas Chlorine- Green gas Bromine-Red/brown liquid Iodine-Dark grey crystalline sold or purple vapour
4
Q
What do the Halogens form?
A
They form ionic bonds with metals (called halides) eg NaCl
5
Q
What do they displace?
A
A more reactive halogen will displace a less reactive one from an aqueous solution of its salt. eg chlorine will displace bromine and iodine from and aqueous solution of its salt ( a bromide or iodide)
