Group 7 - The Halogens Flashcards
How ,many non-metals are there in Group 7?
5
What is chlorine at room temperature and pressure?
A green gas
What is Bromine at room temperature and pressure?
A brown liquid
What is iodine at room temperature and pressure?
A dark purple/grey solid
What happens to iodine when it is heated?
It turns into a purple gas
What do all Halogens consist of?
Diatomic molecules (they exist only in pairs of atoms)
Give an example of this
eg. Cl(2), Br(2), I(2)
What can halogens be used as?
Bleach dyes and to kill bacteris
What happens to the physical properties of the halogens as you go down the group?
They alter
What does it mean the further an element is down the group?
- The lower the reactivity
- The higher the melting and boiling points
- The higher the density
What happens when halogens react with alkali metals?
They produce halides
