Group 7 Halogens Flashcards
Reactivity ___ down the group
Decreases
mpt/bpt ___ down the group
increases
What happens to the changes in state down the group
Going down, the molecules change state from gas –> liquid –> solid
Colour gets ___ down the group
darker
Why does mpt increase going down?
Atoms (+ molecules) increase in size, resulting in more IMFs. Takes more energy to break, higher mpt
Why does reactivity decrease going down?
As we go down the group, the period number increases, meaning we have more energy levels, or shells. So the nucleus is closer to electrons being attracted during bonding at the top, but at the bottom its farther away. Stronger electrostatic forces.
F₂ (fluorine) is a ____ (colour and state). It forms a ___ solution
Pale yellow gas at room temp
colourless solution
Cl₂ (chlorine) is a ____ (colour and state), and forms a ___ solution
Pale green gas at room temp
pale yellow solution
Br₂ (Bromine) is a ____ (colour and state), and forms a ___ solution
Red/brown liquid at room temp
orange solution
