Group 2 Metals Flashcards
as chem
1
Q
Describe melting points down group 2..
A
Melting points generally decrease going down group.
This is due to increased metal ion size so distance between positive nucleus in metal ion and delocalised electrons is greater. This weakens the attractive force. This makes it easier to break bonds as less energy is required.
2
Q
What is formed when group 2 elements react with water?
A
Metal hydroxides (bases)
eg)
X + 2h20–> x(OH)2 + H2
products:
hydroxide (aqueous) and hydrogen gas
3
Q
describe reactivity down group 2..
A
Reactivity increases down group with water
atoms get larger and electron is further from nucleus so its easier to remove outer electron.
