Group 2 and 7 tricky tricky Flashcards
What does an ionisation energy graph show? (think shells)
The number of electrons removed before a big jump in ionisation energies is the number of electrons in the outer shell.
Metal + Acid=
salt + hydrogen
Metal + Water =
Metal Hydroxide + Hydrogen
Metal Oxide + Water =
Metal hydroxide
Why more alkali down the group?
More soluble down the group
( decrease in lattice energy because increase in cation radius= weaker attraction between cation and hydroxide ion)
Trend in oxidising ability of halogens down the group?
Oxidising ability decreases
Why does Flourine have the highest oxidising ability in group 7?
Fewer electron shells, small radius, stronger attraction between outer electrons and nucleus.
Trend in reducing ability of halogens down the group?
Reducing ability increases down the group
why does reducing ability increase down the group?
Larger radius, less attraction between nucleus and outer electrons, outer electrons more easily lost.
How do we fill orbitols?
In order of increasing energy
Colour of Chlorine in water?
Pale yellow
Colour of Chlorine when shaken with cyclohexane?
yellow/ green
Colour of Bromine in water?
Orange
Colour of Iodine in water?
Brown
Colour of iodine in cyclohexane?
Purple
