Group 2 Alkaline Earth Metals and Noble gases Flashcards
1
Q
Equation for alkali earth metals reaction with water (calcium)
A
Calcium + water -> calcium hydroxide + hydrogen
Ca + 2H2O -> Ca(OH)2+ H2
2
Q
Reactivity trends when reacting with water
A
Moving down the group, softer to cut (harder than alkali metals)
More reactive down the group (more vigorous reactions)
Less reactive than those in group 1, because have two rather than one electrons in outer shell to be removed
3
Q
How does calcium react with water?
A
- very gently
- grey granules sink but are carried back to surface as bubbles of hydrogen form around them
- calcium hydroxide insoluble
4
Q
What are noble gases
A
- very very inert
- have full outer shell of electrons
- apart from helium which has two
- no tendency to lose gain or share electrons
