16
Q

Why does thermal stability increase down group 2???

A

Be/Mg are stronger cations than Ba/Sr….. (They are smaller bigger nuclear attraction) This makes them more polarising to the anion!

A stretched elastic band is easier to break than a relaxed band !!

17
Q

Explanation for how colours are produced in a flame test??

A

Heat energy absorbed from the flame excites electrons to higher energy levels - as e-s fall to lower energy levels energy is emitted in the visible light spectrum - we see colours!!!

18
Q

How easily nitrates decompose can be tested by measuring ??? (2)

A

1) how long it takes until oxygen is produced (to relight a glowing splint)
✨✨✨✨
OR…
2) how long until brown gas (NO2) is produced. This needs to be done in a fine cupboard - NO2 is toxic !!!

19
Q

How easily carbonates decompose can be tested my measuring???

A

How long it takes for carbon dioxide to be produced.

Test with lime water - which is saturated sol. CaOH. Turns cloudy with CO2!!

20
Q

Group 2, nitrates decompose to form……

A

Oxygen + nitrogen dioxide + oxide !!

2M(NO3)2 (s). &raquo_space; 2MO (s). + 4NO2 (g) + O2 (g)

21
Q

Group 2 carbonates decompose to form….??

A

The oxide and Carbon Dioxide!!

MCO3 (s). &raquo_space;> MO (s) + CO2 (g)

22
Q

Group 1 ONE 1!!!!!

Trend of thermal stability of carbonates???

A

They are thermally stable - you can’t heat them enough with Bunsen burner to decompose them!!!

(Except Li2CO3)
Li2O and CO2

23
Q

All group 1 carbonates are thermal stable except which element???

A

Li!!!! Li2CO3

To form Li2O and CO2

24
Q

Group 1 ONE 1!!!

Nitrates decompose to form??

A

Nitrite and oxygen!!!!

2MNO3 (s) &raquo_space;> 2MNO2 (s) + O2(g)

✨✨✨expect Li!!!
LiNO3 > Li2O, NO2, O2

25
Q

Group 1 thermal stability compared to Group 2 thermal stability???

A

Group 2 are LESS thermally stable than group 1!!
✨✨✨
Greater the charge on the cation, the greater the distortion and the less stable the carbonate/nitrate ion. Group 2 have 2+ compared to 1+ charge of group 1 cations!!

26
Q

Thermal stability increases down groups 1 and 2….why??

A

Carbonates and nitrates are large anions and can be made unstable by the presence of a +ve charged ion.
✨✨✨
The cation polarises the anion, distorting it!
✨✨✨
The greatest the distortion the more unstable the anion.
✨✨✨
Larger cations cause less distortion than smaller cations.
✨✨✨
Down the group cation size increases!!!

27
Q

Thermal decomposition = ?

A

When a substance breaks down when heated!!!

Don’t add any extra oxygen into your equations!!! Just a heated arrow πŸ’
