they become more reactive, so white precipitate will form at the top of group 2 and clear solution for bottom of group 2
trend of sulfates going down group 2
they become less reactive, so precipitates will form at the bottom of group 2
what is milk of magnesia
magnesiem hydroxide, in which it is used in medicine to treat the excess of acidity in the stomach, as it is alkaline due to the OH, as well as indigestion and constipation
what happens when magnesium reacts with water
magnesium hydroxide and hydrogen are formed
what happens when magnesium reacts with steam
magnesium oxide and hydrogen are formed
what is calcium hydroxide also called and what does it do
it is called slaked lime, and it is used to treat acidic soil

lower melting point as you go down group 2, as the atomic radiu increases in which there are weaker electrostatic forces between the nucleus and delocalized electrons
properties of titanium
strong, low density, high melting point, and is used in aerospace industry, and in making hip joints
why is titanium different to extract than other metals
usually when u react a metal oxide with carbon, it will form the metal and carbon dioxide, however this doesn’t work with titanium, as it will form titanium carbide TiC
metal oxide + carbon—> metal + carbon dioxide
how to extract titanium
titanium oxide + cl2 + C —–> titanium chloride + carbon monoxide
take the titanium chloride and react it with magnesium in order to form magnesium chloride and titanium, in which titanium is now extracted
what is barium sulfate called and what does it do
called barium meal, and is taken orally in order to outline the gut and coat the tissue, making it easier to see on the x ray
- it is toxic, however it is insoluble so doesn’t get absorbed into the bloodstream
how to test for ions
acidify the unknown solution with nitric or hydroclauric acid, then add barium chloride. if sulfate ions are present then barium sulfate will be formed, which would produce a white precipitate
