Trend in thermal stability of group 2 carbonates/nitrates
- Increase in stability down the group
Explain the trend in thermal stability of group2 carbonates/nitrates
- Carbonates/nitrate ion has a large electron cloud
- This is distorted when near group 2 ions
- As you go down the group, the charge density of group 2 ions decreases
- So the carbonate/nitrate ion is less distorted
- The less distortion, the more stable
