Group 2 Flashcards

1
Q

What is the trend in melting points down group 2?

A

As you go down the group, the electrons in the ‘sea’ of delocalised electrons are further from the positive nuclei, as a result , metallic bonding strength decreases, therefore the melting point decreases.

Q

What is the trend in ionisation energy down group 2?

A

As you progress down the group, ionisation energy decreases as less energy is required to remove an electron as there is less affect of nuclear charge, electrons are further away from the positive nucleus.
