Group 2 Flashcards
Atomic radius trend
Increases down the group because there are more shells
Reactivity trend
Increases down the group because shielding increasing so outer electron is easier to lose
First ionisation energy trend
Decreases down the group because increased atomic radius and increased shielding
Melting point trend
Decreases down the group because the metal ions get larger down the group so weaker attractive forces because has to act over a larger distance
Reactions with water (products)
Metal hydroxide + hydrogen
Mg+2H2O(l) —> ???
Mg(OH)2+H2
Observations when reacting Mg with steam
Burns bright white and forms white powder
Mg+H2O(g) —> ???
MgO+H2
Solubility of hydroxides trend
Increases down the group (Mg(OH)2 is least soluble)
Uses of Mg(OH)2
Medicine - Antacid (neutralises acids)
Agricultural - Neutralises acidic soil
Solubility of sulfates trend
Decreases down the group (BaSO4 least soluble)
Use of BaSO4
Medical - Barium meals (used as tracer for imaging) - toxic if in bloodstream but is insoluble so can’t be absorbed into blood
Sulfate ion test
BaCl2 used - forms white ppt. (BaSO4)
Metal extraction
Mg used to extract titanium from TiCl4 (TiCl4+2Mg —> 2MgCl2+Ti)
Flue gas removal (equation)
CaO+2H2O+SO2 —> CaSO3+2H2O
