Group 2 Flashcards
1
Q
Ionisation energies
A
- decrease down group
- as you go down they have extra electron shells
- extra inner shells shield outer electrons from attraction of the nucleus
- outer electrons further away from nucleus so it gradually reduces the electrostatic attraction between and outer electrons
- easier to remove outer electron so ionisation energy decreases
2
Q
reactivity
A
- increases down the group
- easier to lose electrons on the outer shell
3
Q
Reaction with water
A
- Hydroxides
- M + 2H2O arrow M(OH)2+H2
4
Q
Burns in oxygen
A
- forms oxides
- 2M+O2 arrow 2MO
- solid white oxides
5
Q
reaction with chlorine
A
- forms chlorides
- solid white chlorides
- M+CL2 arrow MCL2
6
Q
Oxide and hydroxides
A
- oxides react rapidly with water to form metal hydroxides so they dissolve
- hydroxide ions OH- are strongly alkaline
- BeO exception
- Be(OH)2 insoluble
7
Q
Bases
A
- neutralise dilute acids
- forming solutions of corresponding salts
8

- MO+H20 arrow M(OH)2
- MO+2HCl arrow MCl2+H2O
9
Q
Hydroxides
A
- M(OH)2+H20 arrow M(OH)2
- M(OH)2+2HCl arrow MCl2+H2O
10
Q

A
- Sulphates increase
- hydroxides decrease
