Group 1 Elements Flashcards
How do group 1 metals react with water ?
They react vigorously and violently and produce metal hydroxide + hydrogen
What does the reaction between group 1 metals and water produce ?
Produces hydrogen gas
Why are group 1 metals stored under oil?
So they don’t react with the oxygen in the water
How does the reactivity of group 1 metals vary ?
The reactivity increases as you go down the group
Why are group 1 metals known as alkali metals?
They are known as alkali metals because they form an alkali solution when in water
What happens when the metals are put in water ?
-They produces bubbles and start fizzing
-Some of the metals float as they are less dense
-hydrogen gas produced
What are all the group 1 metals ?
Lithium ( least reactive )
Sodium
Potassium
Rubidium
Caesium
Francium ( most reactive )
What are the properties of group 1 metals ?
- Soft, can be cut easily with a knife to expose the shiny inner surface
- when the surface reacts with oxygen it becomes dull
- low densities
- low melting and boiling points
- overall, highly reactive metals
