6
Q

Why does the reactivity increase as you go down the group (group 1)?

A

Shielding

  • there are more electron shells
  • therefore the outer electron gets further away from the nucleus
  • which reduces the electrostatic attraction allowing the outer electrons to be more easily lost
  • which increases reactivity.

Atomic Radius
- the atoms get larger
therefore the radius of the atom increases
- which reduces the electrostatic attraction
- allowing the outer electrons to be easily lost

Q

Describe the observations you would see when Potassium reacts with water.

A
  • fizzy, bubbles of hydrogen gas
  • melts into a ball in the water that dashes around the surface
  • ignited and produced a lilac color flame
  • disappears the quickest out

Q

Why does the reactivity increase as you go down the group?

A

The further down the group,

  • the higher the atomic radius is and the number of shells. - therefore the electrostatic attraction is further away and weaker
  • so it gets harder to gain more electrons

Q

Describe the trends of the physical properties of Halogens

A
  • Melting and Boiling Points increase as you go down the group
  • state at room temperature changes (more hard and set) as you go down the group
  • the colour (darker) changes as you go down the group
